Robert John Rainey

Robert John Rainey, 72 passed away on June 17, 2026. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, son-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend. Born on November 4, 1953 in Washington DC. Robert was the son of Frank and Dorothy Rainey. He was raised in Avondale, Maryland and graduated in 1972 from North Western High School in Adelphi, Maryland. Growing up, he always possessed a deep desire to help others and a profound sense to make his community a safe place; over time, these ideals guided his decisions and shaped his approach to policing. Before following his calling to public service, he worked briefly as an electrician. Robert was sworn into the Police Academy on May 12, 1975 and upon graduating, joined the Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department where he proudly served for 23 years until retiring on February 27, 1998. Known for his courage, integrity, and compassion, Robert treated every citizen with respect and approached every situation with professionalism. He was highly respected by his fellow officers and earned numerous commendations. During part of his time on the police department, he had a business providing security to local construction sites. Throughout his lifetime he preserved strong personal connections with many of those site owners and construction workers. Beyond the badge, Robert was a man of deep faith and community connection. He began working at Lions Camp Merrick in 1988, first as caretaker, then as Administrator after his retirement from the police department. He was also a member of the local Lions Club and served as the President on the Camp Merrick Board. While in his position at the camp he was able to raise over two million dollars in grants to expand the camp to serve deaf and diabetic children as well as blind adults. Further expansion included a nature center for local school students to enjoy, as well as a rental property for boy scouts, girl scouts and community groups to engage in boating, hiking, sports activities and fishing. He received multiple awards throughout his years at the camp for his tireless dedication, years of service and outstanding leadership. He retired from the camp in 2006 and moved to Pahrump, Nevada. There he started Silver State Services - a handyman service, working exclusively for Century 21 in Las Vegas. In 2008 he moved to Odessa, Delaware to be closer to his children and grandchildren. While there he worked Security for Winterthur and the Delaware Museum of Nature and Science before joining the Circuit Court for Cecil County, Maryland as a Bailiff on November 12, 2012. His strong work ethic and commitment led to his promotion as lead Bailiff on May 27, 2017. After years of faithful service, he retired on August 8, 2021 and returned to Pahrump, Nevada. In 2025 he and his wife decided to move back to the east coast and purchased a home in Ocean City, Maryland where he reconnected with many high school classmates and friends. He enjoyed happy moments and made lasting memories before planning renovations to the home. He resided with his mother-in-law in New Jersey once the renovations began. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He found great joy in world of words constantly lost in books and magazines of every variety and loved reading poetry to his wife. He was a civil war buff and took part in civil war reenactments. He enjoyed cross country traveling with his wife seeing as much of the country as possible and visiting with friends along the way. He had a passion for hunting, hiking and camping with his favorite moments spent sharing these adventures alongside his sons. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, nature walks, bird watching, boating, gardening and fishing. He thoroughly enjoyed discussing politics and frequently shared his perspectives though opinion pieces written for the local newspapers. He was known for his easy going, warm personality, and had an unparalleled work ethic. He could strike up a conversation with anyone and all his female friends wish there were more like him but he had a heart for only one. He led a life well lived, defined by his immense generosity, steadfast character, and unshakeable love for his family. He set a standard of kindness and strength that all who knew him will strive to follow. To his family he was our rock and our guiding light. To say that no one else will ever be able to fill his shoes is an understatement. He was simply one of a kind. His legacy will forever be etched into our hearts and while he is gone, his spirt will never be forgotten. Robert leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving spouse, Anne whom he spent 35 beautiful years, 31 married; his beloved son, Rusty, grandchildren - Mickey, Myles and Khloe; his beloved son, Austin, Daughter-in-law Shelbey, grandchildren - Declan and Logan. His Brother Richard Rainey, and his Mother-in-law, Helen Giova. He was predeceased by his Parents Frank and Dorothy Rainey and Brother Jim Rainey. He is also survived by his cousins, brothers and sister in laws, countless friends and extended police family. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, July 16, 2026 at 11 AM at St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish - Corpus Christi Church, 369 Georgetown Road, Carneys Point, NJ 08069. There will be a visitation, also at the church prior to mass from 10 AM to 11 AM. Burial will be private.
