Louis J. Picciano Sr.

January 6, 2021

Louis J. Picciano, 95, son of Rosa (Mascia) and Nicola Picciano. Born in Chieti, Italy on January 6, 1926, he passed away peacefully on his 95th birthday. Lou immigrated to America in 1932 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II, joining in 1944 right after graduating high school in Mahanoy City, PA. He attained the rank of Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1946. He is survived by his wife of 70 years Marie (Melone), and by his children Linda Chalmers (John), Louis Jr. (Leonora), and Kathy Berns (Chris). He is also survived by his brother Nicholas. He was predeceased by his brother Anthony. Lou had 5 grandchildren (Carl, Julia (Tom Becker), Laura, Natalie, & James), 2 great grandchildren (Lena & Audrey), and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. A son of a coal miner in Mahanoy City, Lou learned the trade of barbering at the encouragement of his father who did not want him to enter the mines. He cut hair for 75 years. He and his brother Anthony moved the family to Camden, NJ after the war, and there he met Marie while working in a barber shop. Also, after moving to Camden, Lou began a lifelong hobby of making wine with his father, later with his son, and then his grandchildren. After marrying Marie, he got a job at the Mobil Research and Development Company in Paulsboro, NJ and moved to the neighboring town of Gibbstown to raise his family. Lou started in the mail room at Mobil and worked his way up to be foreman of the safety department. His work at Mobil enabled him to travel the world to test and instruct personnel on fire prevention and suppression for tankers and storage facilities. Lou was a member of the Gibbstown Volunteer Fire Department for 40 years, and served as treasurer for over 20 years. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Queen of Heaven Council 4154, and the Knights of St. George. After retiring from Mobil he began wintering in Florida, but always made sure he was home for wine making and the holidays with his family. After 49 years in Gibbstown, he and Marie moved to Friends Village in Woodstown which they made their home for the last fifteen years. Lou loved music and was always making mixed tapes for himself and others. He taped and cataloged many of his family pictures through the years to pass to his children. To the surprise of many he grew crafty in his senior years and commanded the craft room at Friends Village, sharing his wooden and painted creations all around the community. And all along the way of course, he was still cutting everyone’s hair. Due to the restrictions surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, Lou's viewing will be private for his family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at 11:30 AM at St. Joseph's Parish Center at the Catholic Community of the Holy Spirit, 2 Lamplighter Drive, Woodstown, NJ 08098. Entombment will follow mass at the New St. Mary's Cemetery in Bellmawr, NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you send donations in Lou’s memory to the Alzheimer Association or the Guardian Angels Regional School, 150 South School Street, Gibbstown, NJ 08027.
